Mountain Kingdom of Bhutan

Choosing an interesting tour to travel is not an easy task. If popular countries are already on the list of “conquered”, and tourists want some unique novelty, then the states hidden in secluded corners of the planet are under the gun.

Hidden from the eyes of tourists is the small Kingdom of Bhutan. It is located in Asia, among the high mountain ranges of the Himalayas, between India and China.

Country and attractions

The history of acquaintance with this country begins with the mid-70s of the last century, it was then that Bhutan became open to tourists. But the state itself, of course, is much older: according to archaeologists, Bhutan was inhabited as early as 2000 BC. The capital of Bhutan is Thimphu.

Rejecting globalisation and worshipping ancient traditions is what sets Bhutan apart. It is difficult to find another state that could preserve its own distinctive culture. Residents still wear national costumes in everyday life, and archery is still a local sport.

Bhutan is a country of Buddhism, purity and enlightenment. It is an unforgettable nature and a unique culture.
The life of local residents is full of a series of colorful festivals. There are more than 20 in a year. The brightest are Thimphu and Paro, and the largest is Tsechu. It has been held regularly since the 8th century and is dedicated to the birthday of Guru Rinpoche. During the festival there are festive processions and lamas bless believers.

On the territory of Bhutan there are many temples, ancient monasteries, cultural complexes and museums. Almost in its original form preserved centuries-old buildings. The "Palace of Great Happiness" or "Punakha Dzong" was built in 1637, it is the second largest dzong in the country.
Built on a high cliff, the unique Taktsang-Lakhang Monastery is considered the main Buddhist shrine of Bhutan, its name literally translates as “the nest of the tigress”.

Another ancient Buddhist monastery, Chaghri Dorjeden, was built in 1620 by the founder of the Bhutanese state, and is now the main center of teaching the school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Happiness in Bhutan

In addition to thousands of years of indestructible traditions, Bhutan has another feature that distinguishes this country from other countries of the world. Bhutan manages to hide in the mountains from the rest of civilization and build its national concept. The motto of the state is “Happiness is just to be here!”

The mission of the King of Bhutan is to make every citizen of the country happy. For this purpose, the “Commission on Universal People’s Happiness” is organized, which conducts a survey of the population. The Center for Gross National Happiness Research in Bhutan is also active. His research is used to develop universal awareness, to build a civilized country.

Kitchen and hotels

Almost all Bhutanese are vegetarians. The basis of their cuisine is rice, it is used in all sorts of combinations. Cheese, beans, buckwheat and corn are also often prepared. Cereals are used with a variety of variations of vegetables and sauces, and always generously add spices. They like spicy dishes. Chili pepper as a seasoning is contained in almost every dish, and in some it acts as the main ingredient. After a meal, locals prefer to drink tea with oil and salt. This combination of tea and spices is called souza.

There are dozens of accommodation options in Bhutan. You can choose a home boarding house and join everyday Bhutanese life. Or you can stay in a chic five-star hotel and try out all the services of spa centers with a full course of Tibetan health treatments.

Visa

Since 1974, the Kingdom of Happiness has been accessible to tourists. But for now, some restrictions still remain.
To not depend on anyone and improvise with the travel route on the spot, unfortunately, will not work. Avoiding routes is prohibited and it is impossible to move around the country without a guide.

A Bhutanese visa can only be obtained if you travel under programs developed and approved by Bhutanese travel operators.

A “visa permit” is first requested to obtain the document. The travel agency sends all data about the traveler to the Bhutanese Tourism Corporation, which issues the permit. Without it, it will be impossible to buy plane tickets. The visa itself you get on the spot, at the airport of Bhutan. The visa fee is 20 dollars, paid on the spot, immediately upon receipt.

An important point in the official paper is the confirmation of the availability of sufficient funds for the trip. The amount of $250 per person per day per season (March to May and September to November) and $200 in the remaining months will be sufficient. This money is set by law as the minimum spending per day.

In Bhutan, it is better to travel in organized groups of more than 4 people. If in the group from 2 to 4 tourists, then to the above rates for obtaining a visa is added $ 30 per person per day. And for independent travelers, the amount increases to $ 40.

Tours and flights

Tours to Bhutan are not a frequent option in the offers of Russian travel agencies. And they are not cheap: the lack of direct flights makes the flight more expensive, and the required amount of minimum expenses per day of $ 250 is also acceptable not for everyone.
Despite the possible difficulties with visiting the country, if you decide on this trip, it will undoubtedly impress you. In this country you will feel yourself outside of time and space, plunge into an atmosphere of happiness. This is a place where there is no rush and bustle and you can enjoy the silence.
