What is Schengen?

Before the appearance of this very significant document, the refusal of passport red tape, namely, from checking passports. Namely, in 1985, the governments of Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, signed an agreement on the abolition of passports when crossing state borders.
Since the negotiations were held directly on a cruise on the Moselle River, near the village of Schengen, the agreement received the same name.

Gradually, the agreement acquired the outline of the Convention and by 1995 had already been implemented in 7 countries, added to the original list of Portugal and Spain. And already practical in 2000, namely, at the end of 1999, the Amsterdam Treaty entered into force, which introduced the Schengen agreements into the legislation of the European Union, thereby obliging all countries joining the European Union to unconditionally accept the current document.

Gradually, the list was replenished by non-EU countries, namely, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and even Switzerland operate under the Schengen agreements.
