Schengen Visa 2025: How to get a Schengen visa?

Despite the difficulties with travel to Europe, the demand for travel to Schengen countries continues to grow. This is due to the strengthening of the ruble and the expansion of the network of connecting air routes, which contributes to a decrease in the cost of tickets. Demand is influenced by summer, a traditionally high period for travel in Europe.

The Schengen Agreement is a treaty aimed at simplifying passport and visa control at the borders of several European Union states. It was originally signed on 14 June 1985 by Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and the Federal Republic of Germany. The agreement entered into force on 26 March 1995 and lasted until 1 May 1999, when it was replaced by the Schengen legislation of the European Union.

The main result of the agreement is the creation of the Schengen area, an area within which the movement of people usually takes place without passport and visa controls at internal borders.

Schengen visa

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries with no border controls. In order to enter these countries, as well as some EU countries that are not fully integrated into the Schengen Agreement, Russian citizens need to obtain a visa.

Since 2022, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia have restricted the entry of Russian tourists, allowing only those visiting relatives, diplomats and persons entering for humanitarian reasons. Since September 30, similar restrictions have been imposed by Finland, and later by the Czech Republic, which also requires a transit visa to transfer at the airport.

One of the advantages of a Schengen visa is the ability to obtain it in one country of the zone and visit several participating States. At the same time, it is important to follow the rules: a tourist must enter the country that issued the Schengen visa and spend more time there than in other Schengen countries.

Schengen visa. Types of Schengen visas

There are three types of Schengen visas – A, B, C. Each Schengen country has its own national visa type D.

Visa A is an airport transit visa. Issued to applicants who plan to fly to other countries through airports of Schengen countries. Visa B is a transit visa. It gives the right to leave the transit zone of the airport. Transit visa is issued for a period of 1 to 5 days.

The C visa is a short-term visa with a stay of up to 90 days and is relevant for tourists. This type of visa has subspecies. The C1 Schengen visa allows you to stay in the countries of the agreement up to 30 days. C2 - up to 90 days within six months, C3 - up to 90 days (visa period up to one year) and C4 - up to 90 days within 1 to 5 years.

The most popular countries for obtaining a Schengen visa to Europe

The leader in popularity among Russian tourists is Italy, which ranks first in sales with many major tour operators. In addition, there is a high demand for Schengen visas to Spain, Greece, France and Portugal.

Schengen visa. Date of consideration of documents

After the suspension of the simplified visa regime between the EU and Russia, the processing of documents for a Schengen visa takes from 15 to 45 working days. In some cases, this period may be extended to 60 calendar days. Tourist visas are usually obtained on average 10 days in advance, provided that the application is submitted outside the peak season.

On the eve of the summer season, the deadlines for issuing Schengen visas are increasing. You can make an appointment to submit documents no earlier than 6 months before the planned trip.

The cost of a Schengen visa in 2025

In June 2024, the consular fee was increased by 10 euros and now stands at 90 euros, resulting in the total cost of Schengen visas in the range of 120-130 euros. For children aged 6 to 12 years, the visa price is 45 euros. Many tourists use the services of telegram bots and specialized services, which for an additional fee help to find free windows to register for the submission of documents.

Some visa centers have introduced new requirements: Spain requires an extract from the pension and social insurance fund for the past 10 years, and Hungary, Germany, Greece and Switzerland require the provision of checks for the payment of hotels and air tickets. This makes the process especially difficult for business tourists who make cashless payments.

How to increase the chances of obtaining a visa

Registration of a Schengen visa requires a careful and responsible approach. The main reason for refusal is an incomplete or incorrect package of documents. To avoid problems, it is important to prepare all the necessary papers in advance and make sure they meet the requirements of the consulate.

It is recommended to apply 1.5-2 months before your trip, especially if you plan to travel to popular destinations such as Italy or France. During periods of high demand – in the summer and before the New Year holidays – the load on visa centers increases, and waiting times can significantly increase.

If you have already had a Schengen visa in the past few years, it is worth considering applying for a multi-visa. Consulates in countries such as Spain and Greece are more likely to issue multiple-entry visas to applicants with a positive visa history.

Financial guarantees also play an important role. Consulates assess solvency, so it is recommended to provide a bank statement or a certificate from the place of work confirming a sufficient level of income.

Don’t try to circumvent requirements by providing fake hotel or ticket reservations – consulates scrutinize documents, and detecting forgery can lead not only to denial, but also to a ban on subsequent applications.

The more carefully the documents are prepared and all the requirements of the consulate are met, the higher the probability of successful obtaining a visa.

Schengen visa. Denial of receipt

The Consul has the right to refuse to consider the application for the following reasons:

- an incomplete package of documents is provided;
- the application found errors;
the applicant from Russia does not meet the requirements for obtaining a visa;
the applicant has previously violated the visa regime;
- the citizen has a criminal record or he is serving a sentence, including a suspended sentence; - the applicant is the accused or suspect in a criminal case.
