Baku City, 12 June 2006
The modern gas industry of Azerbaijan plays a very important role in the economy of independent Azerbaijan. Thanks to oil and gas production and high prices on world markets, the country’s GDP grew by 27% in 2006.
The Karadag gas and oil field possesses large natural gas resources (the reserves in the late 1970s are about 16.5 billion m3). Its industrial development began in 1957. Gas pipelines Karadag - Baku, Karadag - Ganja - Akstafa - Tbilisi were built. Oil and gas processing is concentrated in Baku and Sumgait. On the basis of oil and gas, a variety of petrochemical, gas and other industries has been created in Azerbaijan.
