International Day of Peace

Description:

Peace dove
The International Day of Peace is celebrated annually on the initiative of the UN General Assembly as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.

This day appeared in our calendars in 1982 by the decision of the UN General Assembly (resolution of November 30, 1981). The International Day of Peace was originally celebrated on the third Tuesday of September, the opening day of the regular session of the UN General Assembly. In its resolution of 7 September 2001, the General Assembly decided that, beginning in 2002, the International Day of Peace would be observed annually on 21 September.

The UN strives to ensure that this day is celebrated as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, and invites all States and peoples to observe the cessation of hostilities during this day. The United Nations encourages all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations and individuals to observe the International Day of Peace as appropriate, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in securing a worldwide ceasefire.

The events of recent years – war, terrorism, military spending, deep divisions that divide peoples and individuals around the world – have made the International Day of Peace unprecedentedly relevant today.
