Will passengers be weighed before the flight?
The British company Fuel Matrix intends to introduce systems of forced weighing of passengers in airlines.
According to the initiators of the innovation, fuel consumption can vary in the greater or lesser direction depending on the total transported weight.
Using the collected data on the weight of passengers, carriers will be able to determine the exact amount of aviation kerosene that is needed for a particular flight - this will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the environment.
Now airlines use the average information about the weight of passengers to calculate the amount of fuel for men - 88 kg, women - 70 kg, children - 35 kg.
Fuel Matrix says companies often pour more fuel than they need. On most flights, the surplus is more than 1%, and the amount of emissions increases by 0.3-0.5%. Total fuel economy in the world can reach 835 million euros per year.
The company is currently working with several UK carriers to implement the system. Weighing is proposed to be carried out with the help of special "cushion cushions" and can occur during check-in or baggage delivery. Each passenger will have to give consent to the weighing procedure, and the information will be confidentially transmitted to the airline.
In 2015, Uzbek Airlines was going to weigh passengers, but the idea did not advance further. In 2017, Finnair launched a voluntary passenger weight system.
