World Cup - 2018: announced the first figures
The Association of Tour Operators of Russia published the first results of the World Cup held in Russia.
For example, by the decision of President V. Putin, foreign holders of fan passports (FANID) at the 2018 World Cup received the right to visa-free multiple visits to Russia until the end of this year. The head of state hopes that fans will take advantage of this opportunity and come to Russia more than once with friends and family members.
The number of foreign fans who came to Russia is correctly recorded by the number of FAN IDs issued by them (without them it was impossible to attend matches, FAN IDs were attached to tickets).
The organizing committee of Russia-2018 published information about 1.5 million FAN IDs. Of this number, residents of Russia received 871,000 FAN IDs, hence 629,000 FAN IDs from foreigners.
Most of all FAN IDs, in addition to Russians, were purchased by residents of China (60,000) and the United States (49,000), Mexico (43,000), then Argentines (36,000), Brazilians (32,000), Colombians, Germans and Peruvians (26,000 each), and Egyptians (23,000).
There are no official estimates from the organizing committee for each state.
According to official data, the load of stadiums during matches is 98%. 2,889,351 people (sold 2.9 million tickets) were able to attend the Championship Games at all stadiums.
US citizens bought 88,825 tickets, followed by Brazilians 72,512 and Colombians 65,234.
More than 7 million people went to the venues of the FIFA Fan Festival in 11 cities-organizers of the World Cup, and 70 thousand people saw the exhibition of the FIFA Museum in Moscow.
The entire audience of the final in Moscow was 1 billion spectators.
Airports of our country for the month of the World Cup were able to serve 15 million passengers of domestic and international flights.
Free special trains of Russian Railways for holders of FAN ID carried more than 336 thousand passengers. The average train load is over 74%. Russian Railways allocated 734 trains for 444,650 seats for the transportation of fans.
Consulting company McKinsey estimated that foreign exchange expenses of fans in ruble equivalent could be about 121 billion rubles (1.9 billion dollars).
Foreign cardholders of Visa payment system spent money in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Yekaterinburg. The most significant amount of spending foreign fans in the cities of the competitions fell on the payment of hotels, clothes, restaurants and cafes.
Consulting company CBRE cites information that our country spent $1,387 to attract one foreign fan (excluding investments in infrastructure).
Taking into account infrastructure investments (construction of roads, stadiums, terminals, etc.), for each foreigner involved, there will be about $ 4,500. So spending foreigners in Russia will “recover” a little more than half of these costs of $ 3 billion 150 million for 700 thousand foreign fans.
There are opinions of experts that the World Cup in Russia has become the most expensive in the history of such competitions. However, a larger number of infrastructure investments were not targeted “for the event” – work to improve the transport accessibility of World Cup cities was required by itself and worked on the tourist attractiveness of these regions of Russia.
