What prevented Russia from restoring the tourism industry in 2021?
The head of Rostourism Zarina Doguzova said that Russia in 2021 showed one of the highest rates of recovery in the world of the tourism industry due to the growth of domestic tourism, but lost income from non-arrival of foreigners amounted to 1.2 trillion rubles, which did not allow to return to the figures of 2019.
According to Doguzova, in 2019, the total turnover of the entire tourism industry was 3.7 trillion, and in 2020 there was a serious drop of 70%.
This year we will restore the turnover of the industry to 2.5 trillion rubles. This is a very good indicator, and it was achieved thanks to two factors: a huge number of support measures, the launched national project and domestic tourism, which pulled all these indicators and partially managed to replace the lost income from foreign tourists.
The head of Rostourism noted that the Russian tourism industry receives less due to the absence of foreign tourists 1.2 trillion rubles – these are the revenues that were in the pre-pandemic years.
Almost 11 billion dollars a year were brought to us by foreign tourists, and the biggest money left us by those foreigners who came for recreation and leisure. It is impossible to restore the turnover of the industry and the entire industry without launching and restarting international tourism.”

The Middle East is most actively coming to us – all the Arab countries, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates. Europe and Germany began to travel slowly, with which we restored regular flights on a mutual basis. But the pandemic is still having a very significant impact on the recovery of international tourism. For the time being, we are focusing on domestic tourism.”
