Panama in the center of the maps and why with a local guide will be even more interesting
Copa Airlines will present its ambitious growth strategy for 2026 – a combination of network expansion, fleet investment, tourism development and digital innovation.
This is a deliberate attempt to strengthen the airline’s position as one of America’s key air carriers, while strengthening its role. Panama as a regional hub.
The core of the strategy remains in Panama: the hub in Panama City is designed to quickly connect flights, allowing passengers to save time on flights between North, Central, South America and the Caribbean. By 2026, Copa expects to cover 88 destinations in 32 countries and operate up to 420 flights per day, a figure that highlights connectivity as a major competitive bargaining chip.
In recent months, the airline has opened new routes and restored the previous ones, expanding the route map. Flights to San Diego, Raleigh Durham and Los Cabos have emerged, strengthening ties with key markets in the US and Mexico. In Latin America, destinations to Tucuman, Puerto Plata and Florianopolis have been added, opening up additional routes for regional travel.
Flights previously suspended have also been restored: Salvador de Baya, Salta and Santiago de los Caballeros are back online, and flights to the Venezuelan cities of Caracas, Barquisimeto, Valencia and Maracaibo have resumed, an important step to restore connectivity between markets that depend on reliable air connectivity.
The growth of the fleet is a key factor for the implementation of plans. Copa plans to have 121 aircraft by the end of 2026; an additional 43 Boeing 737 MAXs are expected to join the fleet through 2029. These machines promise to reduce fuel consumption and increase flight range, which helps to optimize costs and expand the route geography. The company is also considering further orders, demonstrating confidence in the long-term demand for flights in the region.
Passenger traffic should grow in line with these plans: the target for 2026 is approximately 20.9 million passengers. The hub-and-spoke model allows travelers to route efficiently through Panama, offering more connections and options than point transfers.
A separate element of the strategy is the promotion of tourism. The Panama Stopover program continues to gain momentum, with more than 215,000 participants expected in 2025 by around 250,000 in 2026. The idea is simple and appealing – add a stop in Panama at no extra cost for an air ticket. Important news: the maximum duration of the stopover is increased from 7 to 15 days, which gives a chance to go beyond a cursory inspection and get acquainted with the canal, the old quarter of Casco Viejo and the nature around - it is best to do this with a local guide who will show the hidden places and save time.
In addition, the company is actively promoting digitalization – updates to the service and onboard digital experience promise to make flights more convenient and modern, from the booking process to entertainment on board.
In sum, these steps – expanding the route network, strengthening the fleet, active promotion of stopovers and digital solutions – reinforce Copa’s strategy as a bridge between continents and turn Panama not only into a transit hub, but also into an independent travel destination.
And remember: to get the most from a short or long stop, you should book a tour with a local guide - so your watch in a new country will turn into a real experience.
