Tours in Barcelona will be conducted by the homeless
A British company operating in Barcelona has decided to launch a social project, during which many homeless people will be provided with work: they are going to be accepted as tour guides.
People without a certain place of residence, for whom Barcelona has become a home, know better than any other professional guide, all the secrets and amazing nooks of the city, as well as the “white spots” on the map of Barcelona.
The presentation of this social project is scheduled for October 5. On October 10, the first tour of the project will be held. The guides will be 45-year-old Jose Carlos and 63-year-old Francisco – perennial residents of the streets of the capital of Catalonia. The first is a former chemist who lost his job a decade and a half ago and has not found it since. The second is an artist.
The selection of applicants for the position of tour guides will be carried out by two Catalan charitable foundations, where homeless people apply for financial assistance. There are about 3,000 homeless people in the city, according to police, most of whom sleep in public places, a smaller number in the open air on streets, avenues and squares.
The idea of hiring people without a certain place of residence as tour guides is not new: for 10 years homeless people have been conducting excursions around London.
