Everest must be saved from rubbish
Starting in April, Nepal will host the Save Everest campaign. It will last until summer 2012. The famous mountain has become not only one of the most famous places of pilgrimage for tourists: it may well be eclipsed by a mountain of garbage, which every day becomes more and more thanks to travelers. Environmentalists in Nepal are very concerned about this issue.
Not that Everest and the hiking trails of Sagarmatha National Park (where the famous peak is located) are not cleaned by local enthusiasts. Their efforts are simply not enough. The local population, for example, has neither the habit nor the experience of solving such problems. In this regard, the defenders of Everest need to develop a long-term campaign to combat the littering of these unique areas and learn how to destroy waste.
The new action involves collecting a total of about eight tons of debris from Mount Everest and on nearby hiking trails. It is also planned to create 15 special plants for the processing of collected garbage.
The project has already received support from the Government of Nepal. New environmental regulations have already been developed for tourists.
