Philippines attacked by powerful typhoon

Typhoon Hayan, which was awarded the highest category on the scale of hurricanes, struck the islands of Samar and Leyte, located in the central part of the Philippine archipelago.

According to various sources, the wind speed there reaches from 76 to 105 meters per second. The height of the waves raised by the hurricane reaches 4-5 meters.

More than 125,000 people were evacuated from the danger zone. A total of about a million people are in shelters. Data on the number of victims of the disaster is not yet available.

Anticipating the typhoon, authorities closed local schools, offices and shops. Almost 200 flights were canceled and public transport stopped running.

The army and rescue services are on alert.

Preparations are also reported for a storm in the Philippine capital, Manila. Although the city does not lie in the path of the typhoon, winds of over 25 meters per second and heavy rains are expected in its area.

Meteorologists predict that the typhoon will leave the Philippines on Saturday, November 9 and head towards Vietnam and Laos.
