Greece 2026: Tourism revenues soar 70%
The beginning of 2026 was for Greece The country’s tourist revenues grew by about 70%, fueled by record influxes of visitors from the UK, USA, Italy, France, Germany and other countries.
This outburst of interest confirms that Greece is once again – and more than ever – one of the main Mediterranean attractions: a sustainable tourist infrastructure, rich cultural heritage and spectacular landscapes have done their job.
According to official data from the Bank of Greece, in January-February 2026, tourism revenues exceeded €1 billion - against €589 million in the same period of 2025. This means an increase of 70.7%, while the number of foreign arrivals increased by 38.5%. Such indicators reinforce the impression that the powerful wave that began in 2025 will continue and give grounds to wait for a longer tourist season.
In the first two months of the year, the number of British visitors to Greece increased by more than 40%. The British went en masse to the islands - Crete, Rhodes and Santorini - combining relaxation on the beach with gastronomic and adventure routes. In parallel, the U.S. is seen as one of the fastest growing markets in terms of traveler numbers and spending, boosting the overall inflow of funds into the sector.
However, the growth was accompanied by challenges: at the end of February, the outbreak of hostilities in the Persian Gulf introduced uncertainty in short-term forecasts and forced part of the market to regroup. Despite this, the overall picture for January-February remains a demonstration of the sustainability of the Greek tourism industry.
What does this mean for independent travelers? Greece is now more popular, which means more people, but more opportunities. To get the most out of the trip:
Plan your bookings in advance – this is important when demand is high.
Consider trips outside peak dates: the growing season offers a chance to find great options in the off-season.
- And most importantly - take at least a couple of excursions with a local guide. The guide will not only point out hidden gems and tell the context of historic sites, but also help with logistics on popular islands where queues and crowds can eat some of the experiences.
As a result, January – February 2026 showed that Greece remains a magnet for tourists from all over the world – and for those who like to travel independently, now is a favorable time to combine the freedom of the route with the professional support of a local expert to see the country deeper and more convenient.
