Veneto Governor Calls Flood “Total and Apocalyptic”

Veneto Governor Luca Zaia said that due to flooding, about 80% of the territory of Venice was under water.

“80% of the city is underwater. The damage has been unimaginable and terrible.”

On his Facebook page, he wrote that the flood damaged gondolas and boats that had previously been moored at the berths. In addition, water flooded the Cathedral of St. Mark (San Marco Basilica). Luca Zaia notes that all schools in Venice are closed due to flooding.

Venice Mayor Luigi Bruñaro called the flooding a disaster.

Due to the bad weather that hit Venice (rains and wind from the sea), the water level in the city rose to a record level of 187 cm, which flooded the historic center of the city.
