In what unusual way were the violators of India’s isolation punished?
Swimming in the sacred river Ganges turned into an unexpected punishment for 10 foreigners. The incident occurred in Uttarakhand state.
The Indian Express reports that police from Tapovan, a suburb of Rishikesh, found the violators during the raid. They were 6 men and 4 women from Mexico, Latvia, Australia and Israel. They admitted to breaking their self-isolation to rest and meditate on the banks of the Ganges River.
Vinod Kumar, head of the Tapovan police station, said: “I told them that the only option for them to relax was to go outside to buy basic goods.”
The authorities were not satisfied with verbal excuses, and forced each offender 500 times to write on paper the text: “I did not observe the rules of self-isolation.” Very sorry.”
