When will direct flights between Russia and Abkhazia resume?

Regular direct air traffic between Russia and Abkhazia is scheduled to resume in May this year, the Russian Transport Ministry said.

Several Russian airlines have already expressed interest in operating flights between Russia and Abkhazia. A test flight to the airport is scheduled for February 7, 2025. Regular flights should begin in May, after more than 30 years of hiatus, the Ministry of Transport said after the meeting of its head Roman Starovoit with the famous political figure of Abkhazia Badra Gunba.

Starovoit also noted that a test flight to the restored Sukhum airport will take place on February 7, and the opening of regular flights is expected by the beginning of the summer season.

In November 2023, a public-private partnership agreement was signed between the Russian and Abkhazian sides to restore the airport in order to resume international flights. Currently, the facility provides jobs for 300 people, of whom 207 are citizens of Abkhazia.
