MARI NAVI - HUGE CANOES
The unusual, very curious exhibition runs until December 12, 2010 at the New South Wales State Library in Sydney. The materials for it were presented by the famous Mitchell Historical Library, within the walls of which unique documents on the history of Australia are stored.
The exhibition is called Mari Navi (Huge Canoes). This is how the natives of the Green Continent called large ships of strange white-skinned creatures. At first, they thought they were evil spirits. The exhibition tells about the people of the tribes of Eora and Darug, who lived around Sydney, who from 1790 to 1850 sailed with English colonists on their ships to London, around Australia and around the world and even became whalers. Model ships and canoes, diaries of the first
Governors, ship logs and maps, portraits of brave natives and their lives, paintings and drawings, carefully stored in the library of Mitchell, will take you to the distant days when the glorious history of a young country was just beginning.
