Bears scare away tourists: where closed routes in national parks

Due to the frequent outings of bears to people in 15 regions of Russia, restrictions were introduced in national parks and reserves - this significantly reduced the activity of domestic tourism, especially in Siberia: tourists began to refuse trips more often. The main reason for this behavior of animals is the poor harvest of nuts and berries: in search of food, bears increasingly appear near settlements and tourist routes.

Restrictions affected the popular territories of Altai, Baikal, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Transbaikalia and Buryatia - somewhere closed individual trails, somewhere completely stopped the reception of visitors.

Where and what measures were introduced:

  • Altai Republic. In the Altai Biosphere Reserve, all ecological and educational routes are closed until the end of the season. On the route to the Uchar waterway, the crossings were dismantled and the safety ropes were removed - now the path is especially dangerous.
  • Irkutsk region. Since August 28, the issuance of permits for visits to six routes in the cluster "Circum-Baikal Railway and the Olkhin Plateau" (including directions from the Dark Padi to Angasol, from Transfer to the BCZD, trails in the area of the port of Baikal and the rock "Stones Potainy") has been suspended. At the same time, the Circum-Baikal Railway itself operates normally.
  • Krasnoyarsk region. In the national park “Krasnoyarsk Pillars” from September 7 banned visiting the recreational zone in the dark, and from September 25 the park was completely closed to visitors – the ban was extended tentatively until November 10.
  • Buryatia. In the Tunkinsky National Park, individual routes were first limited (the trails “Silver Lake” and “Lake Artemyev” were available only for organized groups with a guide), and since September 17, all ecological trails and tourist routes have been closed – on October 22, restrictions are valid until October 23 inclusive.
  • Trans-Baikal region. Alkhanai National Park has been shut down since September 4, with all tourist services closed due to regular bears in popular places.

Now the situation remains under the control of specialized services. Before traveling to natural areas, tourists should check the current warnings on the official websites of national parks - restrictions could change.

How to avoid meeting a bear and what to do if it happened

To reduce the risk of meeting, it is recommended:

  • to move around the forest in a group and not to be silent – ordinary human sounds warn the beast;
  • Prepare and store food away from tents, do not leave food waste in the parking lot, take garbage with you or put in protected containers;
  • Do not fish in places where bears are often seen, do not go off popular hiking trails and do not go along animal trails.

If a bear appears near a parking lot or settlement, inform the responsible services, if there is an immediate threat, call 112.
