Mystras is one of the least known World Heritage sites

In search of little-known but impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites, TripAdvisor conducted a survey among its users, which resulted in a list of the best of them. Among them was the Greek Mystras, an archaeological monument of great historical importance, the pearl of Byzantium and the Peloponnese.

Mystras is located 6 km northwest of the capital of Laconia, Sparta, and consists of a medieval castle and settlement with walls, monasteries, palaces, houses and churches with beautifully preserved frescoes. Among the many ancient (and not so) empires whose remains are scattered throughout the Peloponnese, the beautifully preserved Byzantine city of Mystras is perhaps the most impressive. For two centuries – from йIII to XV – the city played a huge role in Byzantine history and was one of the most important cultural and political centers of late Byzantium, it was here that the last Byzantine emperor Constantine XI Paleologus was crowned. You can feel the Byzantine spirit hovering here even today, exploring the streets and preserved buildings of Mistras.

The top 8, compiled by TripAdvisor, also included the Valley of Kebrada de Umahuaca (Argentina), Fraser Island (Australia), Gros Morne National Park (Canada), Buddha Statue in Leshan (China), Morne Trois Piton National Park (Dominica), Kaziranga National Park (India), Dolomites (Italy).
