Bali's Garbage Island
More and more recently, we’ve been reading news about ... garbage. That, that famous resort periodically declare that there is too much garbage.
This time, the Indonesian island of Bali is sending signals of disaster. The well-known “paradise corner” is experiencing serious difficulties associated with heaps of garbage scattered around the streets and floating in the water. Indonesian media are sounding the alarm, because in addition to this problem, issues related to rolling blackouts, water shortages, as well as overcrowded sewage treatment plants need to be addressed.
And all this can seriously damage the tourist reputation of Bali. For example, according to the local press, if you spend at least half an hour in the water near the popular beach of Kuta, you risk catching some skin infection, because the local water is full of bacteria that appear due to dead plankton and waste floating in the water.
Indonesia’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wazik, blames the strong wind that blows from the ocean and brings garbage to shore, and believes that the garbage problem is not so terrible and that tourists will still return to Bali.
The Bali Professional Guides Association disagrees with the minister. It receives complaints from tourists every day. For tourists, this problem seems very serious. The Association asks the government to pay more attention to this problem and, at a minimum, install special containers for garbage collection in public places. If the authorities fail, Bali risks becoming a real paradise for garbage, not tourists.
