Named the European capital, which “choked” from tourism

The white and red letters “I amsterdam”, which have become a kind of visiting card of Amsterdam, are in danger of disappearing in the near future. The installation, a favorite location for filming guests of the capital, can be removed as a sign of “mass tourism”.

The coalition party GroenLinks, with the support of other political parties, appealed to the city council of Amsterdam to remove installations installed on Museum Square and at Schiphol airport, and not to allow marketing of the capital under this slogan.

Amsterdam is choking on mass tourism and no longer needs promotion. A study by ABN Amro found that there were ten guests for every Amsterdam resident in 2018.

The Dutch Council for Tourism and Congress (NBTC) has conducted a study, according to which inbound tourism in the country is growing faster than expected. The number of tourists in the near future Netherlands It will grow by 50%, from 40 million people in 2017 to 60 million by 2030. NBTC director Jos Vranken said Amsterdam had reached a critical limit on visitor numbers and "a new approach to tourism is needed."

Femke Ruosma, one of the leaders of GroenLinks in the city council, also believes that residents of the capital “want to regain control of the city”, and any marketing of Amsterdam positions it “as a product for sale”.
