New finds in Egypt
The Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt reported that during the excavations, which took place near the oasis of Fayoum (one hundred kilometers from Cairo), archaeologists discovered 57 intact ancient tombs. Almost all tombs contain wooden sarcophagi with mummies inside. Some of the burials according to rough estimates of experts date back to 2750 BC. The head of the archaeological team Abel Rahman El-Ayudi said that the most ancient tomb was completely intact, it even preserved accessories used by the Egyptians during the burial.
Archaeologist Zahi Hawassa, secretary general of the council, said the mummies were wrapped in canvases depicting Egyptian gods and texts from the Book of the Dead. They also covered the interior rooms of most tombs.
