The reverse side of Oktoberfest: who and how much earns at the festival?
The next Oktoberfest started on September 21. The Local found out how much income the festival brings to entrepreneurs and the economy of Munich.
Otkoberfest attracts about 6 million tourists from all over the world annually. Total revenue is estimated at around 1.2 billion euros, according to a report by the economic department of the Bavaria capital.
Guests live in 450 hotels with rooms for 80,000 seats. Prices can be twice as high as on normal autumn days. The total income from hotel accommodation is estimated at 505 million euros. Another 442 million guests spend staying in campgrounds near tents and on trips.
Oktoberfest creates an additional 13,000 jobs, but it's hard to work at the festival. Waiters carry up to 30 kg of beer on their hands, and walk at least 20 km per day.
The action in the tents can be estimated at 300 million euros. A liter mug of beer will cost guests 11.8 euros. Prices increase annually. 17 years ago, a liter cost 5 (!) euros cheaper.
Building and dismantling tents also costs a lot of money. The city takes about 7.8% of profits from land leases.
Revenue of restaurants and bars on Oktoberfest days reaches almost 140 million euros. Each year, about 1,100 merchants apply to participate, but only half of the participants are admitted.
It’s also a golden time for taxi drivers. But mostly drivers have to deal with drunk people who are often inadequate.
Income from individual trade - about 160 million euros. Visitors buy souvenirs and Bavarian outfits.
