Pandemic 2021: What foreign countries do our compatriots travel to?

Now the Operator staff has opened flights with 64 countries, but only half of them with certain restrictions receive tourists from the Russian Federation.

The volume of outbound tourist flow lags behind the indicators of 2019. About 63% of the total Russian tourist flow to foreign countries in 2021 accounted for one country.

Executive Director Maya Lomidze gave preliminary forecasts of ATOR Analytical Service on outbound tourist flow from Russia.

Operator staff officially opened flights with 64 countries (with Tanzania temporarily suspended).

Only 32 countries out of 64 are ready to accept Russian citizens for tourism purposes under certain conditions (from test-free entry to quarantine).

Flights have now resumed with 25 European countries, but only 11 of them are ready to receive tourists, and the vast majority of such countries were not mass tourist destinations before the pandemic.

Russia also has flights with 7 Asian countries (excluding the Middle East region), but only 2 of them are ready to receive tourists, and with rather complex and burdensome entry protocols.

Many popular mass destinations among Russians remained in 2021 and remain closed for travel for tourism, or such trips due to the restrictions will not form significant flows. Outbound tourism in Russia is still very far from the pre-pandemic indicators of 2019.

According to the results of 9 months of 2021, more than 5.24 million trips were made abroad on 14 foreign destinations open to tourism among Russians.

The leading destination in terms of the volume of outbound tourist flow is Turkey - almost 63% of all foreign trips or about 3.3 million.

Next in the TOP-5 are Cyprus (about 0.4 million), Egypt (0.35 million), the UAE (about 0.32 million) and the Maldives (0.18 million).

In outbound tourism during the pandemic, there is an increase in prices for tourist products associated with coveted restrictions and insufficient air transportation.

Prices are affected by the reduced average depth of bookings of foreign tours (now it has fallen to 3 weeks, and for early booking shares - up to 60 days).
