Eurostar train passengers travelling to France will be able to call and have internet access

Cell phone operators EE and Vodafone have signed a $5 million deal that will give passengers travelling from England to France the ability to make phone calls and also provide internet access. The service is expected to start operating from March 2014. Initially, operators will provide access to 3G communication services. The ability to use ultra-fast communication of the new generation - 4G, will appear on trains in the summer.

The innovation will not cause disruptions in the work of the transport artery, because all the necessary work on laying the cable and installing stations has already been done before. Alcatel Lucent, commissioned by Eurotunnel in 2011, already installed the necessary equipment in both sections to enable train drivers and technicians to make calls. French mobile operators have been providing this service since June 2012. About 20 million passengers use the Eurotunnel every year.
