Atef Latif, the representative of the Red Sea Investors Association, said that the upcoming winter season will be successful not only for such resorts as Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, but also for the resort of Marsa Alam (275 km from Hurghada).
Local hoteliers receive reservations from tour operators in Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. There are also applications from Russia, but they are not very many, since there are no direct flights from Russia to Marsa Alam.
According to Mr. Latif, many Russian travel and aviation companies have submitted requests to the industry departments of the Russian Federation and Egypt with a request for flights to the Marsa Alam International Airport. If there are no problems with issuing permits from the Egyptian side, then the process may be delayed on the Russian side.
Experts of the travel industry reminded that direct flights to Marsa Alam from Russia have never been performed.
Moreover, this destination is not specified in the intergovernmental agreement on regular flights. Therefore, at the current stage, when only regular flights are allowed from Russia to Egypt, transportation to Marsa Alam is hardly possible. So, in early September, Rosaviatsiya has already denied airlines access to flights to Marsa Alam.
In order to launch direct flights to Marsa Alam, it will be necessary to amend the intergovernmental agreement. It's not a quick process. It could take months or more, said a source familiar with the situation.
Flights to Marsa Alam will be available when charter flights to Egyptian resorts are allowed.
Tour operators will supply charters to this Egyptian resort, whose hotels are already represented in their range (now they are sold with arrival in Cairo). Of course, there will be no such volume of transportation as Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh. But several frequencies per week from Moscow will be announced.”
