St. Petersburg is ready for the celebration of the City Day

The government of St. Petersburg today adopted a resolution “On the preparation and holding in St. Petersburg in 2011 festive events dedicated to the City Day – the Day of the Foundation of St. Petersburg”. The Culture Committee will coordinate the work on the holiday program. The organization of transport, ensuring order, financing and other issues are entrusted to the relevant committees. Control over the implementation of the decree is entrusted to the Vice-Governor Alla Manilova.
The events of the City Day were described in detail by the Chairman of the Committee on Culture Anton Gubankov. This year, the holiday will open on May 21 with an unusual action “Karaoke in St. Petersburg” – right on the streets, residents and guests of the northern capital will sing together their favorite songs about Leningrad and St. Petersburg. Song lyrics will be shown on huge screens. From May 21 to 22, the Night of Museums will be held, in which 65 cultural institutions will take part. The birthday of the city will begin with the traditional laying of flowers to the Copper Rider, and will end with a festive fireworks display. In addition, on May 27, an important event will take place – the transfer of the Sea Passenger Port to the city. On the same day, the ceremony of presenting the badges “Honorary Citizen of St. Petersburg” and awarding the laureates of the Government Prize in the field of literature and art will be held. The “Parade of St. Petersburg Melodies” will be held in the Academic Chapel, and a concert of “movies” by composer Andrei Petrov will be held in the Oktyabrsky BKZ. The weekend of May 28 and 29 will be literally full of different events. Nevsky Prospekt will become pedestrian, and the Palace Square will turn into a huge theatrical and concert venue with amphitheatre stands. Here on May 28, the action “Universe of St. Petersburg” will open – viewers will see huge balls over the square – among them will be “Planet of Flowers” and “Planet of Water”. The holiday will be attended not only by professional artists and musicians, but also amateur groups. The celebration program includes a carnival procession along Nevsky Prospekt led by bikers and drummers, Street Music Day, the Imperial Gardens of Russia festival, a jazz festival, the Ice Cream Festival, a lifeboat regatta and international curling competitions. One of the exclusive ideas of the holiday is the parade of historical steamers in the Neva waters. All districts of the city prepared their programs. Primorsky district will be distinguished by the Parade of wheelchairs, and the Frunze district will give one of the renovated roofs to the platform for performances of youth musical groups.
Governor Valentina Matviyenko noted that the program of the City Day is becoming more diverse every year, more and more “new, creative, non-repeating ideas” appear in it.
