Police in the Czech Republic monitor cleanliness

In the Czech city of Usti nad Labem (75 kilometers north of Prague) installed 154 cameras. They are designed for police to keep tabs on unscrupulous smokers throwing cigarette butts on the ground rather than into an urn.

Throwing a cigarette butt past an urn, according to local law, means disturbing public order, which is punishable by a fine of up to one thousand crowns (40 euros). In just one day, shortly after installing the equipment, police fined 300 offenders.

Local residents resent the fact that law enforcement agencies monitor smokers, instead of fighting crime. Police say that the main purpose of the cameras is to monitor the order, reports Radio Praga.
