Maldives political crisis: what should tourists do?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation recommends that travel enthusiasts carefully weigh the expediency of visiting the Maldives.

On February 5, President Abdullah Yamin Abdul Gayoom declared a 15-day state of emergency. The internal political situation in the country deteriorated after the Supreme Court of the Maldives decided to release from prison some leaders of opposition parties.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the problems of the authorities with the opposition affected only the capital. The situation on the islands of the archipelago is calm.

The Foreign Ministry asks Russians to seriously assess the need for a tour to the Maldives before the end of the regime. “Those who cannot refuse to travel are strongly advised to travel without stopping in Male on arrival at the airport and to exercise the utmost caution.”

Experts of the tourism industry are sure that the “capital” problems associated with politics will not affect tourism and resorts of the Maldives. The peculiarities of vacationing on the islands are that tourists almost “do not come into contact” with the daily life of the Maldives capital and politics.

“The resorts are calm. No complaints and appeals from tourists have been received, tours are implemented in a normal mode, the service for tourists is the same as before, said Maya Lomidze, Executive Director of ATOR.
