Who do Russian families like to travel with?
On average, 15% of family trips of Russian organized tourists are “multi-generation”, that is, they include grandparents.
The largest number of such trips is observed in summer to Turkey, and in winter to Egypt. However, there is also an increase in the share of travel by large families. China and Vietnam.
Multi-generational travel is a journey that brings together multiple generations of family (grandparents, parents, children) and is becoming one of the key trends in tourism in 2025. This is not just a trend, but a persistent phenomenon caused by demographic changes and changing priorities of family vacations after the pandemic. In Russia, multigenerational trips have not yet become mass, but interest in this format has been steadily growing over the past five years.
Grandparents who value close relationships and time spent with their families intend to invest in joint trips. At the same time, 46% of such travelers would rather spend money on a dream trip than leave an inheritance. Often wealthy older travelers are happy to pay for their children (80%) and grandchildren (78%).
This is not surprising: earlier we mentioned that the so-called “silver generation” in Russia is currently one of the most solvent, unlike the youth (so-called “zoomers”), who, as a rule, have little free money.
In the summer season of 2024, almost one in six family applications (16%) are applications with more than two adults. Most likely, they are grandparents or (less commonly) other adults who help with children.
Where do families with grandparents go to relax?
- In summer, Turkey absolutely leads in the number of family applications with grandparents (multi-generation) – it accounts for 75% of all such applications in the summer season (May-September). In second place, Egypt (9%), on the third UAE (6%).
- The quantitative leader in multigenerational applications in the winter season is Egypt with 42% of all applications of this type. In second place is the UAE with 23% and in third place is Turkey with 18%, in fourth place is Thailand with 9%.
