Thailand's elephants threatened by coronavirus pandemic

Due to the spread of a new type of coronavirus infection, not only people but also animals suffer. According to The Star, Thailand’s elephants are on the verge of survival.

The country’s tourism industry employs about 2,000 elephants, whose living conditions were difficult to call acceptable before. Exhausting physical activity, maintenance in chains and rigid methods of “education” are the fate of animals that are engaged in entertainment. They now face starvation and the risk of being sold to zoos or illegal traffickers.

An adult elephant needs 300 kg of food per day, but due to the sharp decline in tourist flow, pet owners keep on a diet.

The only hope is external funding. The owner of Elephant Nature Park, Sangduen Challier, organized a fundraiser to help elephant parks (about 50 in Thailand). Now parks cannot provide animals with enough food and medicine.
