List of Extreme Cities in the World

The publication El Pais (Spain) published the top extreme (difficult for life and tourism) cities in the world.

The population in them is subjected to critical tests – very cold or hot temperatures; or lives at altitudes where breathing is difficult.

The first place the publication puts Russiatown yakutsk and Oymyakon village. Yakutsk is characterized by the most extreme climate: the air temperature in winter drops to -40 C, and in summer it can reach +29 C.

At the same time, Yakutsk is a regional center, the most important Siberian cultural, scientific and economic center.

The village of Oymyakon (Yakutia) is distinguished by the lowest temperature ever recorded on the inhabited part of the Earth - in 1926 it dropped to -71.2 C.

Next in the top of El Pais is the city of Verkhoyansk. The authors included it in the list due to record temperature changes: the lowest recorded value is 69.8 C, and the highest is 37 C, a difference of 106.8 degrees, because of which the city entered the Guinness Book of Records.

According to the publication, San Luis Rio Colorado (Mexico) can carry the title of the hottest city in the world: there the maximum temperature reached + 59.5 C. The most inaccessible city on Earth El Pais considers the mining city of La Rinconada (Peru) at an altitude of 5099 m above sea level in the permafrost zone.

Jericho and Tabha (Israel) are the lowest in the world (more than 200 m below sea level). The most remote is the city-island of Adak in the Aleutian Islands.

Hammerfest and Longyearbyen can compete for the title of the northernmost city.Norway), and the town of Barrow (USA). For the titles of the southernmost settlements compete Ushuaia (Argentina) and Puerto Williams (Chile).
