Airports are ready to abandon paper boarding passes

Passengers at Russian airports will board the plane using electronic barcodes in 2019. This order was approved by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.

Under the new rules, airlines will issue a boarding pass in the form of a barcode, this will help passengers pass the inspection, presenting a document on the screen of an electronic medium, for example, a smartphone or tablet.

The order on innovation was prepared in 2017, but could not get registration by the Ministry of Justice due to disagreements with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The essence of the claims are two mutually exclusive rules.

First, an electronic boarding pass has the same legal force as one printed on paper. But another rule requires passengers to stamp on the passage of inspection on a paper ticket.

Now the Ministry of Transport has eliminated the contradiction, and the order of the Ministry will come into force after registration with the Ministry of Justice. That is, pre-barcodes will replace boarding passes in 2019.

Experts believe that electronic boarding passes will help reduce the period of passenger service at the airport and reduce possible delays of aircraft.

Paperless technologies are being actively introduced in some Russian airports.
For example, in the terminals “Domodedovo” in 2017 put automated turnstiles eGate for processing electronic boarding, thanks to them, passengers were able to pass the control at the entrance to the departure zone and on board the aircraft.

Travelers must attach a QR code on their mobile device to the scanner. Representatives of Sheremetyevo said that the introduction of new rules will require a transition period, and it will avoid failures in the adjustment of modern systems.
