Egypt bans tourists from feeding fish
Egypt He intends to join the UN’s Greenfins initiative to protect coral reefs, first in a “test version.”
According to Egyptian Streets, the main goal of the initiative is to protect the reefs and their inhabitants from human impacts, including diving and snorkeling. Requirements for tourists: do not drop anchor on the reef, do not pollute the water with chemicals, do not feed fish.
At least 3 million divers dive into the Red Sea every year, about 500 companies conduct diving and snorkeling tours: the industry has a serious negative impact on marine flora and fauna.
While Egypt will conduct a “test joining”, the initiative will be introduced in the province of South Sinai. By March 2020, it could be extended to all of Egypt.
