Will cheap flights run out in Europe soon?
The Association of Tour Operators of the Russian Federation reports that in April 2020 Germany The updated rate of environmental tax on air travel begins to apply.
The new tax will apply to all flights except connecting flights.
Now every traveler departing from Germany on a domestic or international flight up to 2.5 thousand km long will have to pay tax not 7.50 EUR, but 13.03 EUR. The ticket will be more expensive by at least 5.53 EUR.
Passengers departing from Germany for a distance of up to 6 thousand km will pay 33.01 EUR instead of 23.43 EUR of tax, and on flights longer than 6 thousand km - 59.43 EUR instead of 42.18 EUR.
The decision was made to increase the popularity of local railways - the proceeds will be used, for example, to reduce VAT on railway transportation from 19% to 7% - tickets will be cheaper by 10%.
In France, the environmental tax is valid from July, in Sweden – from 2018. In the Netherlands, too, took care to charge passengers more money. It seems that the trend will spread to other EU countries, especially the most developed ones, and the era of airfare for 5 EUR will end.
