In China, opened the longest sea bridge in the world

In southern China, the world’s longest sea bridge with a length of 55 kilometers was opened, it connected Hong Kong, Macau and the city of Zhuhai (Guangdong province).

The journey from Hong Kong to Zhuhai now takes just thirty minutes instead of three hours.

The opening ceremony of the bridge took place in Zhuhai, it was attended by President Xi Jinping, head of the Hong Kong administration Carrie Lam, Deputy Prime Minister Han Zheng and other guests.

It is planned that by 2030 more than 29 thousand vehicles and 120,000 passengers a day will be able to pass on the bridge. The bridge can contribute to economic integration and development of the three most important cities of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, tourism in Hong Kong and Macau.

The construction of the bridge consists of several surface parts, their total length of 22.9 kilometers, an underwater tunnel with a length of 6.7 kilometers, artificial islands and special border checkpoints between mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

The weight of the bridge exceeded 400 thousand tons. The Chinese authorities hope that the structure will be able to stand for more than 120 years and is designed to withstand a typhoon with wind speeds of over 300 kilometers per hour and an earthquake of 8 points.

The idea of connecting Hong Kong and Guangdong province with a bridge arose in the late 1980s. In 2003, China’s central government ordered the project to be calculated and developed.
