A new state may emerge in the world
The islands of Bougainville and neighboring Buca in the Pacific Ocean could become a separate country.
In the referendum for independence from Papua New Guinea came 87% of their residents, 98% of them supported the decision.
The referendum was preceded by a protracted civil war that ended in 2001 with a peace agreement. One of the conditions was a referendum. It took place between November 23 and December 7, 2019. The results were announced on December 10.
98% of the voters voted for independence of the islands, the rest - for the expansion of autonomy. But this does not mean that the territory can now be called a separate country. The authorities of the island must find a compromise with the central government and get the approval of the parliament of Papua New Guinea.
