Authorities explained how much jamon can bring tourists

Mosselkhoz reports that the rules for the transportation of jamon and other delicacies by tourists across the Russian border will remain unchanged.

The Agency does not plan to impose additional restrictions on the transportation of livestock products from abroad for personal use.

Since 2010, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has had rules for the transportation of controlled goods, which allow products to be transported in packages weighing up to 5 kg for personal needs without accompanying documents. If the weight of products exceeds the specified mass, a special permit and veterinary certificate are required for its import into Russia and other EAEU countries.”

The only restriction can be introduced if a “unfavorable epizootic situation” arises in specific countries, and then the Rosselkhoznadzor requires temporary restrictions and customs control of baggage.

At the end of April, the National Meat Association of Russia proposed to ban the import of dairy and meat products from abroad for private use. The corresponding letter, as reported by Vedomosti, was received by Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Gordeev.

The letter proposed to strengthen control over baggage and hand luggage at the border, and to increase responsibility for the illegal import of animal products. The only product allowed for import is to leave formula for baby food.

The official reason for treatment is the risk of carrying over the border pathogens of dangerous animal diseases along with food. The association believes that the main channel for these viruses is travelers from abroad.
