WHO: a possible case of hantavirus transmission from person to person on a cruise ship
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that hantavirus transmission between people could occur on board the cruise ship MV Hondius – although this route of spread for this virus is extremely rare.
Usually hantavirus is transmitted from rodents to humans through secretions (feces, saliva, urine).
It can cause respiratory problems.
Transmission from person to person is recorded in isolated cases, so the risk of infection for other passengers remains low.
What happened?
The MV Hondius sailed from Argentina to Cape Verde.
Passengers and crew have symptoms of respiratory illness.
3 people died: an elderly couple from the Netherlands and a tourist from Germany.
Huntavirus is officially confirmed in a British citizen (now a Johannesburg hospital) and in a deceased woman from the Netherlands.
At the time of the outbreak, about 150 passengers and 70 crew members were on board.
European media reported that Oceanwide Expeditions is evacuating two crew members with suspected infection and a passenger who was in contact with a deceased German citizen.
The liner will go to the Canary Islands, but the Spanish authorities may prohibit him from entering the port.
