The first guide to the Franz Josef Land archipelago will be released before the end of 2011. The Russian Arctic National Park, which includes the archipelago, is of great international interest, the expert explained, and the development of tourism in the national park is one of the priority tasks indicated in the government's order to create a specially protected natural territory.

The government decree on the establishment of the Russian Arctic National Park was signed on June 15, 2009. Its territory includes the northern part of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, there are the largest bird bazaars in the Northern Hemisphere, walrus rookeries, as well as one of the most important centers of reproduction of the polar bear of the Kara-Barents marine population.
