Why is Egypt building a wall around Sharm El-Sheikh?
Around the resort on the Red Sea of Sharm el-Sheikh, construction of a concrete fence has begun, the wall will stretch for 37 km.
There is no official information about the purpose of the fence. Because of the veil of secrecy surrounding the project, the public offers conflicting ideas.
Local residents doubt the effectiveness of this measure. However, the wall as a physical barrier to restrict the access of undesirable elements is used in the world: the Berlin Wall, the Israeli fence near Palestine, the wall in the Crimea near Perekop, the construction of Trump on the border of the United States and Mexico.
Authority Egypt No official information is given yet. “This is not the wall you were told about. We don't have a wall, South Sinai Governor Khaled Fuda said.
At the same time, he revealed the project of a “protective line”, which consists of high barriers of concrete and at least 37 km of barbed wire fence with “four very beautiful doors” for passage into the city.
The general believes that the barrier will “decorate and protect Sharm el-Sheikh”. “We are doing this for the future. The project will help Sharm el-Sheikh compensate for lost tourism revenues.”
Local residents were skeptical of the construction: the resort is surrounded by checkpoints and surveillance cameras, and people do not want to be spoiled by the view of the desert and mountains. “To us, this is ridiculous. This security barrier will not matter, it will just annoy tourists and terrorism will not stop. Any tourist leaving the city will worry that they are not safe, a local resident said.
The fence will not appeal to Sinai’s indigenous Bedouins recruited “to help fight elements of jihad elsewhere in the Sinai Peninsula.”
Hotel workers in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh are confused – they were not warned about the construction of the wall. “To be honest, nobody understands what’s going on,” said K. Walmsley, manager of the Rixos Hotel.
The idea of building a wall around the resort was considered by the authorities of South Sinai in 2005, when there were two high-profile terrorist attacks against tourists - in 2004, 34 people were killed and 171 people were injured due to explosions. In 2005, in Sharm el-Sheikh on the day of the Egyptian revolution, bombs exploded near the bars in the hotel: 88 dead and 150 wounded.
The safest resort is Hurghada and mini-resorts of El Gouna, Makadi, etc., where you can open direct charters from the Russian Federation.
