A prisoner in his own country.
"Face of Australia" in the past, actor and producer Paul Hogan, familiar to Russian audiences on the film Crocodile Dundee, was banned from leaving Australia due to an unresolved conflict with the country's Tax Office.
Hogan, 70, has flown to Australia for his mother's funeral and must remain there until the conflict is resolved.
His wife Linda Kozlowski and their son Chance currently live in Los Angeles.
Hogan's lawyer Paul Robinson said Hogan was stunned and disappointed by the way the Australian government has treated him.
The actor has been under scrutiny by the IRS and the Australian Criminal Commission for several years. His lawyers said that after 5 years of investigations, the crime was not identified and no charges were filed.
During these 5 years, Hogan often came to Australia for work, as well as 5 children, 9 grandchildren, brother and sister with whom he often sees.
The case against Hogan is based on tax returns from 2002-05, during which the actor was not a resident of either country for some time, although he received multimillion-dollar income from film production and advertising.
In those years, Paul used the services and advice of the firm Ernst & Young. The Australian Tax Office believes that Hogan hid from taxes income of $ 37.6 million, and now, together with fines and interest, owes the country about 95 million.
Paul completely denies his guilt.
Many ordinary Australians believe that the authorities and the tax administration of the country are unfair to their pet.
In 1985, Paul Hogan was named “Australian of the Year” after he starred in an ad that attracted a huge number of tourists from around the world.
