Zambia uses Trump’s controversial speech to advertise the country

To promote itself as a tourist destination, Zambia decided to use a “semi-censored” quote from US President Donald Trump, who called the states of Africa, Haiti and El Salvador, in the most neutral translation, “dirty holes” (shithole).

The US president spoke at a closed-door meeting at the White House on January 11, where he said the US should not accept migrants from "dirty holes" like Haiti. The UN Human Rights Committee described the statement as racist and xenophobic.

The leadership of Zambia did not miss such “advertising”. The state tourism website and Zambia’s official social media pages featured an ad that ironically played up the quote.

“Victoria Falls is another reason to visit ... the hole in Zambia,” one of the slogans on the website reads. “The only stars and streaks you’ll find here are in the sky and on the zebra,” Zambia said.
