Smoking ban reaches Egypt
Egypt is the largest consumer of tobacco in the Arab region, and human rights advocates are now trying to ban smoking in public places in Alexandria. It is the second largest city in the country and the largest port. Smoking will be banned first in government offices, and then, if the action is successful, all cafes and restaurants will be in the “no-go zone”.
But the government has some doubts about the success of the project: Egyptians consume about 20 billion cigarettes a year, many become heavy smokers at a very early age, and more recently, the passion for tobacco reaches even women.
