The city of Staritsa is part of the Pushkin ring of the Upper Volga. In 1829, Alexander Pushkin stayed in Staritsa (the house of the merchant Filippov). At this time, Staritsa was a small provincial town, in which merchants occupied a special place (historical buildings of the late XVIII-XIX centuries on the Pharmacy Lane). Merchants gathered on the trading square, which since the end of the XVIII century was the center of the city (the historical space of the old trade square with the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin (Pyatnitsky) of the middle of the XVIII – first quarter of the XIX centuries). Various crafts developed in the city, especially blacksmithing (white-stone forges of the late XVIII century). There were many temples in the Old Man. In one of them was buried the locally venerated Saint Pelageya Staritskaya, revered by the old people as the mother of the first Russian Patriarch (the ruins of the Voznensen Church of the middle of the XVIII century. in the city garden). The main temple of the city - Borisoglebsky Cathedral (early XIX century), was located on the New settlement. Old fortifications - Old and New - places in which the medieval Elder and Old Woman of early modern times were located. In the XVI century. it was the specific center of the princes of the Moscow princely house. The Staritsky princes, nicknamed so in the center of their patrimonial possessions, were relatives of Ivan the Terrible, who took possession of the Elder in 1566. About the Elder of the XVI century. reminds Staritsky Assumption Monastery, founded in the XVI century by Andrei Ivanovich Staritsky (Dormition Cathedral of the XVI century, Vvedenskaya Church of the second half of the XVI century). It was in this monastery that Job began his monastic service, who in 1589 became the first Russian patriarch in history. About the Elder-Fortress of the Tver princes, founded under the name of New Township by the Tver Grand Duke Mikhail Yaroslavich, an archaeological monument is reminiscent - Staritsky Old Fortress, with an earthen rampart, which is the highest point in the urban landscape and a good observation deck (the town "Staritsky", XIII-XVIII centuries).
