Old caves
Description:
Staritsky caves are abandoned quarries in which limestone was mined in the XVIII - early XX century.
They were located for 30 km on both banks of the Volga, above and below the city of Staritsa. Limestone mined in quarries was used mainly as a building material. Still in Staritsa you can see white stone temples, houses and tombstones. At the beginning of the XX century, the Elder supplied all the upper Volga region with limestone - up to Yaroslavl inclusive. Some quarries formed a system of corridors and halls that went up to 500 m deep into the root bank of the Volga. In the 20s of the XX century, the extraction of limestone in these quarries ceased. Many quarries were destroyed, others have survived to this day. The preserved quarries today are called “old caves”. They attract a large number of tourists and are a unique monument, at the intersection of nature and culture, geology and archaeology.
A standard excursion to the caves involves a visit to the Selzo cave, known in the XIX century as Efimyanovskaya clutter. It is located within the city of Elderly and is most accessible to tourists. Excursion to the cave Selzo takes about 1.5 hours and costs 8000 rubles for a group of up to 5 people, then: + 500 rubles per person.
Expeditions to distant caves - Badger, Fox, Ice and Parabellum - are discussed separately and differ in price. Remember that a tour of the caves is a little more than just a walk. It requires some physical effort. It’s easy to get dirty in caves, especially getting your shoes dirty. In the caves all year round about the same temperature, about 6 degrees Celsius.

Спасибо гиду Сергею за увлекательную экскурсию по пещере-каменоломне. Сын, 11 лет, в полном восторге. Даже летучие мышки были к месту. Особенно впечатлил зал в пещере, украшенный к новому году гирляндами и елочками! На улице жара, август, а в пещере новый год ?!

Были семьей на экскурсии с Сергеем в пещерах, очень понравилось, рекомендую, очень атмосферно. Гид с юмором, интересно рассказывает об истории своего края, дозу экстрима даст под ваш запрос:) Сами пещеры мне подъем адреналина однозначно дали: возможно это «простые» пещеры, но тогда сложные - точно не мое, хотя клаустрофобии за собой не замечала.

Посещали Сельцовские каменоломни 08.07.2025 в сопровождении Сергея. Получили массу приятных впечатлений и новой информации. Маршрут несложный, вполне доступен для людей с низкой физической подготовкой. В итоге одна из участниц преодолела свою клаустрофобию и получила совсем новые для себя впечатления. Исключительно благодаря профессионализму, такту и помощи Сергея, за что спасибо ему огромное!

Посещали пещеру с гидом Сергеем. Нам всё очень понравилось. Сергей внимательный и отзывчивый гид. На всё вопросы с удовольствием отвечает, сам много рассказывает и показывает. Если есть трудные места всегда поможет и подстрахует. Были с ребёнком 8 лет, он был в восторге!
