Skyscraper Uš ć e
PC Usce, Bulevar Michaela Pupina 6, 11070 Belgrade, Serbia
Description:
Usce Tower is the second tallest building in Serbia and the tallest skyscraper in Belgrade. It is a freestanding glass building, from the upper platform of which a panoramic view of the city opens.
Usce was built in 1964 and was used as the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Union of Communists in the former Yugoslavia. This building was given to the Communist Party. Hence it received the title of “symbol of a strong communist country”.
The tower is known to many from the events of April 21, 1999, when NATO air forces launched several successive strikes that damaged the structure of the building. A few days later, the NATO attack was repeated, with a total of 12 missiles hitting the Usce Tower.
But the symbol of a strong communist country was not destroyed. The frame of the building was so strong that it did not allow the tower to collapse to the foundation. Nevertheless, restoration work was started in the early two thousandth years and completed in a few years. During the reconstruction, several more floors were added.
Today, the tower is a 25-storey building with a glass facade, which houses conference rooms, restaurants, office space, an observation deck, cafes and fitness rooms.
Many people see the reconstruction of the building as the revival of Serbia.
