Climbing Adam's Peak - Sunrise at its peak
Description:
The peak of Adam or Sri Pada (sacred footprint) is an important place for pilgrimage. Representatives of the four major religious denominations consider the peak a sacred mountain. Buddhists believe that a huge footprint pressed into the rock at the top of 2,243 m. The Sri Pada mountain was made by the Buddha himself during his second visit to the island in the 6th century BC. Other religious pilgrims on the island – Hindus, Catholics and Muslims (and others) – also climb the peak to invoke blessings. Sri Pada is the 4th highest mountain in Sri Lanka and it takes 3 hours to climb the peak. The mountain is also called Samanala Kanda or Butterfly Mountain.
