Description:

Destroyed government building, Sukhum, Abkhazia
The main holiday of all the people of Abkhazia.

There is almost no family in Abkhazia where this holiday is not celebrated with tears in their eyes.

This day in the history of Abkhazia is a landmark, it is the anniversary of the liberation of the capital of Abkhazia from Georgian troops. During the September offensive of 1993, the battles for the capital of the Republic of Sukhum predetermined the overall outcome of the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia. The operation to liberate Sukhum from Georgian State Council troops lasted 11 days. Heavy fighting in the capital lasted several days.

The operation to liberate the city ended on the square in front of the government house (now Freedom Square). The main enemy forces, having suffered serious losses during the battles for Sukhum, were unable to organize an effective defense in the still occupied eastern regions of Abkhazia.

The day after the liberation of Sukhum, on September 28, on the bridge over the Kodor River near the border of the Gulripsh and Ochamchir districts, the connection of the Western and Eastern fronts took place. On September 30, 1993, the entire territory of the country was liberated from Georgian troops.

On this day there is a parade, fireworks, folk festivities on the embankment of Sukhum.
