Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Caucasian War in Abkhazia
Description:
Today, Abkhazia celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Caucasian War and the Forced Eviction of the Mountain Peoples of the Caucasus. In the sixties and seventies of the XIX century, thousands of Abkhazians were forced to leave their historical homeland and move to the countries of the Middle East. The Mahadjirs settled in communities, restoring the laws and traditions adopted in the Caucasus. Descendants of Abkhazian mahajirs live in 45 countries. The largest Abkhaz diaspora is in Turkey.
On the embankment of the Mahadzhirs in Sukhum on this day, the already traditional laying of wreaths and flowers to the memorial stone takes place. The stone was laid on May 31, 1990 on the Sukhum embankment. A monument to the mahajirs was supposed to be erected at this place. For a number of reasons, the monument was never created. The ceremony is attended by heads of state, members of the government, deputies of parliament, descendants of Abkhazian mahajirs.
